A man in his early 30s had been doing headspins for about 19 years when the bump on top of his head finally pushed him to see a doctor. Over the previous five years, the lump at his crown had grown much larger, his hair had thinned around it, and the scalp had turned tender.
Neurosurgeons at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark diagnosed what dancers call a "headspin hole" and described the case in BMJ Case Reports in October 2024. The injury is getting a fresh look now that what its authors call the first overview of breaking injuries built from case reports has landed in the September 2026 print issue of the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, after first appearing online in October 2025. Together, the two papers show how a street dance turned Olympic sport is still producing injuries that medicine has barely documented.
