Years after NEP spoke of digital literacy, 3 of 4 govt schools still don’t have a functional desktop

In May 2020, as India was preparing to overhaul its education policy, the Narendra Modi government held a review meeting on education that placed technology at the centre, to help build what the government described as a “global knowledge super power”.

Two months later, the Union Cabinet approved the National Education Policy. It made digital literacy, coding and computational thinking essential skills for every student. Coding activities were proposed to begin in the middle stage (Grades 6–8), while mathematics and computational thinking had to receive stronger focus from the foundational years.
