Yankees, Nationals Could Make Big Offers To Pete Alonso

Juan Soto made a move across New York City when he signed his record-breaking deal with the Mets on Sunday night. His old team may be looking to lure a player to do the same, as the Yankees might turn to Pete Alonso and ask him to make a similar in-city move.

Could Pete Alonso Sign With The Yankees?

With Soto signing the richest contract in the history of sports, it would make sense that the Mets would be short on cash. But they shouldn’t be counted out of the Alonso “sweepstakes” just yet. Owner Steve Cohen has notoriously deep pockets, with his team having the most expensive payroll in the major leagues in each of the last two seasons. Staying in Queens is still on the table for the slugging first baseman, but there should be other teams that show interest as well.

The Yankees would make perhaps the most sense. They will be looking to re-tool after their failure in the World Series this past season, and have an obvious vacancy at first base with Anthony Rizzo’s departure. The other big name at the position this off-season is Paul Goldschmidt, though he is a full seven years older than Alonso. Other options would include Josh Bell and Christian Walker.

The team from The Bronx will be looking to improve in other facets as well, but they’ve already missed out on two reported targets. They were of course outbid in their attempt to re-sign Soto, and had Willy Adames on their radar before he signed with the Giants on Saturday.

Pete Alonso Next Team Odds (If Not NY Mets)

Washington Nationals +450
Seattle Mariners +550
New York Yankees +650
San Francisco Giants +750

What other teams might be interested in bringing in Pete Alonso? There haven’t been any reported formal offers made to the 30-year-old, but there are assumptions about what teams might take a run at him. According to BetOnline, the Washington Nationals would be the betting favorites at +450 (if he doesn’t re-sign with the Mets). The Seattle Mariners could have some interest and are listed at +550, with the Yankees third on the board at +650.

During the 2024 season, Alonso played in all 162 games. Always known for hitting long balls, his power numbers were down across the board, including the lowest home run total in any healthy season of his career. His career slugging percentage of .528 dropped to .459, which was the lowest figure in any of his six years in the majors.

But in what was easily the worst season of his career statistically, Pete Alonso was still an All-Star who hit 34 home runs. And because of the weaker market on first basemen this off-season, he will likely be one of the coveted pieces in the coming weeks or even days.
