The friend, Sofia Nelson, a transgender public defender in Detroit, shared emails dating back to mid-2014 to early 2017, revealing a significant shift in Vance's stance on various issues.
During the time of the emails, Vance was critical of former President Donald Trump, referred to late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia as 'a very shrill old man,' and expressed negative sentiments towards law enforcement. However, he maintained a warm and considerate relationship with Nelson, even seeking her feedback on his book's portrayal of her identity.
