Xiaomi's Vision Gran Turismo Hypercar Is Its Coolest Creation Yet

THE BREAKDOWN:

  • Xiaomi is the first tech company to design a Vision Gran Turismo car for the Gran Turismo video game franchise.
  • The Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo features cutting-edge aerodynamic elements, like an Active Wake Control System.
  • The wild wheels feature magnets that keep the covers stationary, reducing drag.

Following a long line of automakers before it, China's Xiaomi has designed its own Vision Gran Turismo hypercar. This is the 51st Vision Gran Turismo concept vehicle for the video game franchise—and maybe one of the coolest.

The sleek electric hypercar features advanced aerodynamic elements, like the Active Wake Control System. This generates air at the back of the vehicle, and through micro-perforations around the taillight, it pushes turbulent airflow farther away from the rear.

The Xiaomi also has wild Accretion Rims. They are vortex-shaped wheel covers with turbine fins inside that pull air to cool the brakes. Magnets keep the covers stationary when the vehicle is in motion, reducing drag. According to the company, the car has a drag coefficient of 0.29.

Inside, Xiaomi tried to create a "Sofa Racer." The dashboard, seats, and door panels form a loop around the cabin, which has a slim screen at the base of the windscreen. There’s a screen on the race-inspired steering wheel, five-point harnesses, and a row of physical switches between the seats.

The car is packed with sensors that monitor the environment and the driver, and is capable of tailoring the vehicle to the driver’s mood. It has AI, steer-by-wire, and all the other goodies you would expect from a futuristic video game concept car. The company even envisioned a driving simulator based on the concept.

Motor1’s Take: Xiaomi is a Chinese technology company that announced, less than 5 years ago, that it would begin building cars, and now it has a car in Gran Turismo. It’s quite a feat and represents the country’s astounding rise to dominance in the global automotive industry.
