Microsoft’s new age verification rollout for Xbox in the UK has been causing problems for users. There are countless reports from users about issues caused by this age verification system. Microsoft has acknowledged this and says that it’s working on fixes, but for now, this new system is causing problems for users.
The age checks are part of Xbox’s effort to comply with the UK’s Online Safety Act, which, as the name suggests, aims to make online services safer for younger audiences by verifying age before granting access to certain social and communication features. Discord also rolled out a similar update.
Currently, the age verification process is optional, but it will soon become mandatory. You won’t be able to use basic features like voice and text chat, as well as game invites to non-friends, unless you verify your age.
The idea itself is great; safer online communication for minors is important, but it’s the execution that’s causing issues.
Widespread Issues Reported During Rollout

The problems started once the verification prompts started appearing. Many players in the UK have complained that the new age verification system feels like a barrier rather than a smooth step. X, Reddit, and other forums are filled with reports and complaints from fans.
Most of these complaints can be summarized as follows:
- Forced Sign-outs: Players are forced out of games to complete the age verification process. For some, it’s harmless, but for others, they have lost crucial saves.
- Locked Online Features: Even after completing the verification process, many users complained that they are still locked out of basic communication features. It’s something to do with updating your privacy settings, which you can’t do for some reason.
- Verification Failures: Many users can’t seem to get past the verification process even if they follow the steps correctly, adding another wave of frustration.
These reports suggest that the problems are not limited to one specific console or account age bracket, and users with long-established accounts are among those affected. Some players have even reported that their accounts are older than 18 years old, yet they still have to complete the age verification process.
Fortunately, Microsoft is well aware of this problem and has said that it is working diligently on fixing it. They have also comforted players saying that the age verification will not affect prior purchases or saves. Players experiencing issues are advised to wait for official updates and support guidance as the company adjusts the rollout and fixes technical bugs.
