Xavi makes blunt Erling Haaland admission as Barcelona lose out to Man City

Barcelona boss Xavi has revealed losing out on Erling Haaland is "difficult" as the Borrusia Dortmund striker agrees terms on a move to Manchester City.

The Citizens are set to officially trigger the release clause in Haaland's contract after beating Real Madrid and Barca in the race to sign Europe's most prolific young forward. The 21-year-old will be one of City's top earners on £300,000-a-week, drawing him level with Premier League superstars Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish.

The Blues are set to land Haaland for £63million. They are also prepared to pay him a mammoth salary even at his tender age. Etihad chiefs are desperate to add a new No. 9 to their ranks after missing out on Harry Kane last summer.

With Karim Benzema still in prolific form for Real at 34 and Barcelona currently struggling financially, Haaland and his camp felt City was the right move at this stage in his career. However, Xavi has admitted it is tough to take as the Norwegian international closes in on a switch to the Etihad Stadium.

"It is very difficult because of the economic situation," the Spanish head coach said ahead of his side's game against Celta Vigo. "I can't lie to you, that is the reality.

"I wouldn't say [it is only down to money]. I am not going to disrespect other clubs' sporting projects. We are not the only club with a good project. City have won a lot of titles and compete at the top level. But if what you say happens [and Barca don't sign Haaland], it would have been because of financial issues."

Dortmund won the first scramble for his services in the winer window of the 2019/20 season and he had scored a total of 85 goals in 89 games for the German giants.

Haaland helped Dortmund to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, while also winning the DFB-Pokal. He was also named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season and his tally stood at 41 goals in all competitions.

This season, Haaland has been excellent again, proving why he is becoming one Europe's most lethal frontmen. With 28 goals in 29 matches, the forward had the pick of Europe's top clubs for his next move, but opted for City, where he will spearhead the attack.
