Xabi Alonso keen to raid old club Liverpool for talent highly rated by Jurgen Klopp

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are weighing up a loan move for teenage Liverpool full-back Luke Chambers.

The left-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock, where he made 16 first-team appearances. Chambers is highly rated at Anfield but will not be involved in the first-team squad this season.

Andy Robertson is the established left-back in Jurgen Klopp’s side while Kostas Tsimikas is expected to provide cover once again in the position. Chambers, who has been capped for England at international level up to the Under-19 stage, is now expected to go out on loan once more.

The teenager is likely to go on Liverpool’s pre-season tour. Klopp’s squad will travel to Germany for games against Karlsruher and Furth before going east to Singapore, where they will play Leicester City and Bayern Munich – before returning to England to face Darmstadt 98.

Chambers – who turned down the chance to represent England U-20s at this year’s Under-20 World Cup in order to finish the season with Kilmarnock – is likely to be loaned out again before the season commences. German side Bayer Leverkusen have expressed an interest.

Coached by former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, they play a 3-5-2 system with wing-backs but the two players who occupied the left wing-back position last season are no longer contracted to the club as Alonso seeks replacements.

Former Paris Saint-Germain wing-back Mitchel Bakker has left Leverkusen after two seasons to join Serie A outfit Atalanta, while his fellow Dutchman Daley Sinkgraven has also left the BayArena after his contract expired. That has led to the club’s interest in Chambers, who would provide competition in the position next season.

In September 2022 Chambers was name-checked by Liverpool’s first team assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders, along with Bobby Clark and Stefan Bajcetic, as “stand out" players from the Liverpool’s youth ranks.

Fellow left-back Tsimikas has previously said of Chambers: “This kid impresses me a lot. He’s a very, very good player and always very focused in the training. For me, my personal advice for him is to never stop dreaming and never stop working hard.”

After making his first senior appearance against Dundee United in February, Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes said it was a “great debut” and added that Chambers “was making his senior debut at 18, there was a lot of nerves, but the level of performance was very mature.”
