BMX star and three-time X-Games champion Pat Casey has passed after a horrific motorcycle incident on Tuesday in Ramona, California.
The 29-year-old rider was tossed off his motorcycle after performing a jump but lost control after missing the landing. CBS has reported that the BMX star's motorcycle incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. at Slayground Motocross Park in Ramona.
The 29-year-old attempted a risky motorcycle jump when riding around with his friends, but the ride ended with tragic results.
California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber declared that investigations involving the crash remain ongoing but further communicated that Casey missed the landing after performing a jump and couldn't be saved by paramedics. The San Diego Sheriff's Office verified that endeavors to rescue Casey lasted nearly an hour, but the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife and two children survive Casey. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support the family, which has already outmatched a $5,000 target goal by more $20,000 at publication. The X-Games published a video of Casey in his honor by composing a commendation to their former series champion.
"We are deeply saddened by Pat Casey’s passing, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, parents, and siblings," the statement read. "A true legend in the action sports community, Pat will always be a member of the X Games family and an inspiration to everyone’s life he touched."
Several notable stars in the BMX community have already begun to pay tribute to their late colleague.
"Pat, thank you for blessing all of us with your kind and loving personality," wrote six-time X-Games champion Kyle Baldock. "You are the toughest person I have ever met, we have been friends since ASA days which is like 10 years ago, and you always have inspired me to go harder.
"We all will miss you so much it doesn’t seem real. You're tough as they come, bro. I love you, bro, and my thoughts are with your whole family and friends. Rest Easy, Pat."
Chase Casey, Casey's wife, re-shared posts honoring her husband’s legacy via social media, sharing recollections as she mourned the loss of her husband. The Caseys were wed in August 2013 and were raising children Taytum and Reid.
The 8-year-old Reid aspires to follow in the footsteps of his father as a BMX rider. During an X-Games documentary in 2020, Chase Casey stated: "If the kids could take one thing from Pat about it would be to live every day like it's your last -- and I think Reid has grasped that idea."
In the same video, Casey added: "The only thing I need my kids to know is to enjoy your life. You only have one; enjoy it."
