WWE legend Rey Mysterio would pick Cristiano Ronaldo as the football player he would like to face in the new WWE 2K22 video game.
The lucha libre icon, who in 2022 celebrates his 20th year since his WWE debut, was unveiled as the face of the new game on Thursday.
During an exclusive press conference the former WWE champion, who is an avid football fan, was asked which player he would create in the game, it came as no surprise that he chose the Manchester United star.
“Between Messi and Ronaldo. But if I had to pick one, I’d probably go with Ronaldo,” the 47-year-old replied.
“Just because Messi looks like he’s more of a chill laid back dude and Ronaldo will get in the ring and try something new.”
This year’s edition of the game, set for release on March 11, features a redesigned gameplay engine to new controls and upgraded visuals, WWE 2K22 is set to look, feel, play, and “Hit Different.”
Players will feel heavily immersed in the game due to varied camera angles and the most stunning graphics to date will ensure an unprecedented level of realism.
Mysterio is excited to play the game and represent his Mexican culture in such a profound manner.
“Representing the culture of lucha libre as the cover Superstar for WWE 2K22 is a moment of great pride for me,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to sharing the stories behind the big moments of my career with a dedicated community of players and connecting with WWE fans in a whole new way as they play through my 2K Showcase.”
Alfie Brody, Vice President of Global Marketing Strategy at 2K, was delighted for Mysterio to be the face of the WWE’s annual computer game, which has been graced by many legends throughout the years.
“Throughout his career, Rey Mysterio has staged multiple comebacks to prove his resiliency time and time again, and through it all, has cemented his legacy as a living legend of sports entertainment,” he gushed.
“In that same spirit of resiliency, WWE 2K22 strikes back with a slew of upgrades and community-requested features to give players complete control over the WWE experience.”
Mysterio has featured in a plethora of wrestling games over the years, dating back to the late 90s and his time in the former promotion WCW.
The 2006 Royal Rumble winner is thoroughly impressed with the way graphics have evolved over the years and he is keen to play the game with his son Dominick, who is now a WWE superstar himself.
He added: “I’m truly impressed. I don’t play as much but my teacher is Dominik. And sometimes we travel with our PlayStation and we’ll sit down in the hotel and just play each other.
"He teaches me a lot about how the process works and how get into certain modes.
“But overall, I’ve seen the evolution of gaming and it has been incredible. To go into a certain mode and you can play or pick storylines that you saw throughout your childhood is amazing.”
Both Rey and Dominick will feature in the upcoming Royal Rumble, an event Rey is all too familiar with after emerging victorious 16 years ago.
That will surely feature in the returning 2K Showcase game mode, which will allow players to relive the iconic moments behind Mysterio’s most famous matches.
