Sharanappa Kanchyani, veteran children’s writer and publisher of children’s books, died in Vijayapura on Wednesday.
The 92-year-old writer died of age-related ailments. As per his wishes, his family members donated the body to the BLDE Medical College in Vijayapura for research and medical education.
He had been writing and publishing books, mostly for children, for over 60 years.
Hailing from Saroor village near Muddebihal in Vijayapura district, he served as a primary school teacher in various villages and towns in Vijayapura district and retired in 1988. He had obtained an MA degree in Kannada literature from Mysore University. He started Grameena Pratibha Prakashana, a publication house for children’s books.
He was known for his award-winning Kannada works Ajjana Kadu, Tottilu Gubbi, Gudu Gudu Gunda and Gil Gil Gidda.
He was a recipient of the Central Sahitya Akademi award, Karnataka Sahitya Academy award, Kannada Sahitya Parishat award and national children’s literature award. He served as the chairman of the children’s sahitya sammelan in Bagalkot.
BLDE Society chairman and former Minister M.B. Patil, historian A.L. Nagur and others have condoled the passing of the writer.
