Wrexham star Paul Mullin has shut down "ridiculous" comparisons to Erling Haaland and claimed he hasn't seen anyone like the Manchester City forward before.
Haaland, 22, smashed the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season on Wednesday with his 35th of the campaign. He struck City's second in their 3-0 victory against West Ham to beat Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole's record with five matches to go.
It was also Haaland's 51st in all competitions and he could hammer more records with City set to play at least another eight games before the end of the season. As for Mullin, he notched 38 goals in the National League to propel the Red Dragons back to the Football League.
But when asked about similarities to Haaland, Mullin was having none of it. He told GQ: "Don't be ridiculous. In terms of the numbers it's quite similar this season I've never seen anything like it. Obviously anyone comparing us has to be joking!"
Mullin celebrated Wrexham's promotion win with an open top bus parade across the town as they booked their return to League Two for the first time in 15 years. There was a carnival atmosphere in the Welsh town as the Red Dragons celebrated a monumental season which saw them shatter the fifth tier points tally.
He added: "The bars were too busy so we ended up going back to the stadium as a team. At 6am I went to the medical room to try and kip on one of the physiotherapy beds.
"Then at 6:20am, the physio comes in singing ‘We’ve got Mullin, super Paul Mullin’, wakes me up. Then we’re out again. I was awake for 40 hours. People were hanging off lampshades at one point."
It wasn’t just the men’s side that were celebrating their achievements throughout the afternoon. Wrexham’s women also won promotion this term via the play-off final to secure a place in the Genero Adran Premier.
The women’s squad were stationed among the second of three buses to soak up the acclaim of supporters and were joined by Reynolds and McElhenney, as they underlined their affection and commitment to all elements of the club and not just the men’s side. The pair also laid down their love of Welsh life as they joined in with an impromptu rendition of the national anthem.
Speaking to S4C ahead of Tuesday’s parade, McElhenney said: "I don't think we're necessarily concerned with losing money as much as we are concerned with making the club sustainable, that was always our intent.
"It is interesting to see a lot of the media that has come out over our annual report from this past year because it is not taking into account so many different things. We don't respond to it because we know what the truth is, which is that the club is certainly on its way to becoming sustainable and that's what our goal is."
