Wrexham promotion heroes overlooked as Phil Parkinson and Paul Mullin's rival honoured

Wrexham's promotion heroes have been snubbed as the National League announced its team of the season.

The Red Dragons have been promoted to League Two as champions, winning 34 games and scoring 116 goals to rack up 111 points. That ensured they finished ahead of Notts County, who themselves enjoyed a brilliant season, finishing just four points behind Wrexham.

But it is County who have received the most recognition, with their star striker Macaulay Langstaff being crowned Player of the Season. Langstaff and four of his team-mates have also been named in the team of the season, with Wrexham only having three players featured.

Captain Ben Tozer has taken one of the centre-back spots, with Elliott Lee one of the central midfielders and Paul Mullin named at striker alongside Langstaff. Mullin had also battled the County star for the golden boot award.

The Englishman scored 38 goals in the National League, but Langstaff beat him to the golden boot by firing in 41 goals. That return also saw him beat Mullin to the player of the season award, having set a new National League record for the most goals in a single campaign.

While Wrexham were left disappointed in the team of the season nominations and the player of the year award, they were celebrating one piece of recognition. Manager Phil Parkinson has been crowned the manager of the year.

Parkinson has been in charge at the Racecourse Ground since the summer of 2021 and led them to the play-off semi-finals last season. This term he finally fulfilled the brief of winning promotion.

In the process, the Englishman won two manger of the month awards and has now picked up the manager of the year crown. The news was announced on Thursday, with Parkinson having frequently sung the praises of promotion rivals County.

"It's emotional because I know how much it means to all the people of Wrexham and the supporters. There's a bit of relief as well because losing in the play-offs last year, to put that right this year has been amazing," he said after Wrexham won the title.

"Notts County have pushed us all the way. It's been an extraordinary kind of year and we've had to win nearly every game. When we won to have 107 points - an all-time record - and still not be promoted and still need to go again, it's been an amazing challenge.

"Credit to Notts County for that but I've been immensely proud of the players obviously, staff, all the supporters, everyone that works at the club, the owners. Because ever since I've been here I've sensed that community, togetherness, spirit and that's what you need."

National League team of the season: Nathan Ashmore (Boreham Wood); Jeff King, (Chesterfield), Ben Tozer (Wrexham), Kyle Cameron (Notts County), Adam Chicksen (Notts County); Elliott Lee (Wrexham), Matty Palmer (Notts County), Ruben Rodrigues (Notts County); Macaulay Langstaff (Notts County), Paul Mullin (Wrexham), Ryan Colclough (Chesterfield)
