Wrexham are reportedly lining up a move for former Middlesbrough striker Curtis Main.
Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney want to sign a new centre forward to partner Paul Mullin ahead of the Red Dragons' return to League Two. Wrexham won promotion to the fourth-tier for the first time since 2008 back in April after pipping Notts County in tense, dramatic title race.
Mullin scored 38 goals in 46 matches as Wrexham wrapped up the National League title by beating Boreham Wood 3-1 on a jubilant evening at the Racecourse Ground. However, since that date, the Red Dragons have been planning for the new season and their return to the Football League.
With that in mind, Reynolds and McElhenney have been on the lookout for a new striker. According to Daily Record, ex-Championship hotshot Main is on their radar. The 30-year-old is now at Scottish Premiership outfit St Mirren and has scored nine times in 39 appearances this season.
Main is out of contract at the end of June and it would not cost a penny for Wrexham to sign him this summer. However, the Red Dragons could face competition from the Indian Super League for his signature, after impressing up in Scotland since his move in 2021.
The forward scored twice in a 2-2 draw against Scottish champions Celtic last month as St Mirren finished sixth in the Scottish Premiership. Boss Stephen Robinson confirmed on May 31 that it is looking more likely that Main will not sign a new deal at The SMISA Stadium and will move on to pastures new.
Robinson told Paisley Daily Express Sport: "Curtis is very unlikely to stay. When you are getting double and triple your money offers in England's League One and Two then you need to just admit that you are not going to get there. Curtis has been absolutely excellent for me, he’s been terrific every time he has played and he’s earned the right for possibly one more big move.
"Even on Saturday he was playing with an injection in his foot and he’s given absolutely everything. That’s the kind of quality people we have inside this building and I wish him nothing but the best if he moves on."
Main would bring experience and extra quality to Wrexham's attacking department. He is a strong, powerful centre forward who can hold the ball up, but is also excellent in front of goal. The former Shrewsbury marksman would be a perfect partner for Mullin and add some more Football League experience to the squad.
Across his career, Main has scored 68 goals in 416 appearances, and although he is not prolific, he brings a lot more than just finding the back of the net. Phil Parkinson admitted last month that Wrexham may only sign one or two players in the summer window and Main could be one of those.
