'Wouldn't be surprised' - Liverpool tipped to rival Man City for future transfer of ex-Chelsea starlet

Billy Gilmour has been tipped to one day play for Liverpool or Manchester City by former Chelsea forward Pat Nevin.

Gilmour ended his five-year stay at Chelsea on deadline day, whom he had joined from Scottish giants Rangers in 2017, and made the move to Brighton and Hove Albion after finding it difficult to break into Thomas Tuchel's plans earlier this summer.

The 21-year-old, who impressed during last summer's European Championships - especially during the stalemate with England at Wembley, was not given a shirt number by Tuchel and was later made to train the club's reserve squad during the pre-season tour of the United States.

However, despite enduring a difficult first senior loan spell at struggling Norwich City last campaign, the talent of the Scotland prodigy could be unlocked by Graham Potter in the coming years, according to Nevin.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, he said: "I wouldn't be surprised if Billy Gilmour ends up playing for Liverpool or Man City in a few years

"Billy Gilmour is at a crucial point in his career, and the move to Brighton is brilliant. It's the right move. Chelsea won't regret selling him because that's not the way they think as a club - but they may want to buy him back again.

"Four or five years down the line, I won't be surprised if he's playing in the Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea midfield - he's that technically good."

Gilmour had been linked with a move to the Reds' Merseyside rivals Everton this summer, with Frank Lampard, the man who handed the midfielder his Premier League debut, a huge fan of the Scot.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has previously gone public with his praise for Gilmour, labelling him as "probably one of the biggest Scottish talents for the last 50 years" in August 2021 before Liverpool travelled to Carrow Road.
