Worried friends of 'vulnerable' Lanarkshire man fly out to Lanzarote in bid to find him

Frantic relatives and friends of a man who has gone missing while on his first trip abroad have flown over to the holiday island of Lanzarote in a bid to bring him home.

Robert Campbell from Uddingston was due to fly home from a holiday with close friend Paddy on Tuesday, May 11 but the pair became separated in the airport when Paddy had to be checked out medically and receive fit-to-fly approval

The 44-year-old has not been heard from since. Despite initially being told by police that Robert, known as Rab, had used his passport to re-enter the country, his loved ones have since been told he hasn't boarded a flight home.

It's believed Rab, who has run out of vital medication, didn't board the plane due to being unable to find his passport and the airline flagging concerns for his health. His family has been told that he was then taken to hospital but hasn't been informed of his whereabouts or condition.

Rab and friend Paddy had been forced to change their flights due to Paddy taking unwell and requiring medical assistance. They then booked onto another flight with TUI because Rab was desperate to get home to his dog, Buster.

Two of his close friends have flown out to Lanzarote in a bid to track him down.

The pair have been handing out posters with information on how anyone who knows anything about Rab's whereabouts can get in touch.

Police Scotland confirmed Robert had been reported missing and said enquires to trace him were ongoing.

Friend Sam Hutchy posted a desperate appeal on social media, stating: "Robert was last seen heading to Lanzarote airport on 11th May.

"He was on holiday with his best friend and they ended up separated due to Paddy taking unwell. Police Scotland initially stated Robert used his passport to enter Edinburgh but it has now been confirmed this is not the case by police, his friends and family.

"Please if you’re out there or members of any Lanzarote groups please share it.

"Robert is vulnerable and potentially lost in a foreign country this is his first time abroad so he may be unsure of what he needs to do to get home."

Robert is the second Lanarkshire man to go missing on the holiday island in recent months.

Gary Shearer disappeared after flying out to celebrate St Patrick's Day but has not been seen since leaving a bar in the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen on March 16.

The 53-year-old – who has type 2 diabetes and epilepsy – was reportedly denied entry to a taxi outside Bar 67 and was later spotted on CCTV laying unconscious in a doorway.

His heartbroken family – who travelled to the Spanish island to conduct their own search – say they have to accept the likelihood that he has died.
