World War I dogs had jobs that could save a soldier’s life — from finding wounded troops to warning of mustard gas

When we picture soldiers in the trenches of World War I, dogs may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet thousands of military dogs served alongside troops, taking on roles that ranged from battlefield rescue to carrying messages and hunting rats in the trenches.

These dogs were far more than companions. Their extraordinary senses, speed and loyalty made them valuable military assets at a time when communication technology was limited and battlefields were often chaotic.
