World's 10 best holiday destinations revealed including Majorca, Hawaii and Mauritius

Mauritius is top of many people's dream holiday bucket lists - and now it's been named the world's best holiday destination for 2023.

The East African island has everything from stunning streets of colonial architecture in Port Louis to aquatic tour guides who will take you deep sea fishing.

The 38-mile by 29-mile paradise has busy waterfronts and markets in the town, and plenty of resort areas such as Mont Choisy and Trou-aux-Biches where relaxation is easy.

Mauritius is a crossroads of a number of different cultures and this is reflected in its cuisine, which mixes Indian, African, Chinese and French Creole.

The island has just been named as the number one nature destination in TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice awards, underlining how sought after and special a hotspot it is.

Second in the list is Kathmandu in Nepal, a capital which is surrounded by a valley full of historic sites, shrines, and fascinating villages

Kathmandu is also famed for its spectacular temples, including the iconic Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swoyambhunath Stupa, and Changu Narayan Temple.

After exploring these, you could head into the stunning mountains which surround the city and make for perfect hiking territory, including the Annapurna Circuit and Langtang Valley.

The city is also home to a variety of markets and shops, where you can find everything from traditional handicrafts to modern clothes, with particularly popular spots including Thamel Street, Ason Market, and New Road.

In third place is the Serengeti.

"The Maasai call the plains of Serengeti National Park "the place where the land moves on forever"—so prepare to be astonished by its vastness," TripAdvisor writes in its review of the area.

"And here, you can witness the famous Serengeti annual migration, the largest and longest overland migration on earth."

The area - which stretches for 30,000km/sq - is incredibly diverse, including swamps, grassland, woodland and ravine forests.

As a result its animal population is vast and complex, featuring a large lion population, around 70 different types of large mammal and 500 bird species.

The one European destination on the list is Majorca in the Balearic Islands, which came in seventh place.

Brits have long flocked there for its beautiful beaches and cheap holidays in the sun, but the island is also blessed with a richness of nature.

"Attracting visitors from all parts of the world, Majorca is a dreamy island destination in the Mediterranean Sea, just off the southeast coast of Spain," TripAdvisor writes.
