World Pipe Band Championships: Glasgow road closures motorists need to be aware of

Thousands of pipers from across the globe will soon descend on Glasgow for the World Pipe Band Championships.

Nearly 150 bands will soon take part in the competition, which returns to Glasgow Green on August 12 and August 13.

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) and Glasgow Life, the charity which delivers culture and sport in Glasgow, have confirmed that 146 bands will compete.

Glasgow first hosted the World Pipe Championships back in 1948, with the city hosting the event every year since 1986. Inveraray and District Pipe Band were the last World Champions back in 2019.

Due to the size of the event, roads will be affected with restriction applying to all vehicles with the exception of an emergency service vehicle carrying out an emergency response or vehicles given permission from Glasgow City Council filming and events section.

So what road closures should motorists be aware of? Here's wheat you need to know.

According to Glasgow City Council, the reason for restrictions is down to the "safety of the event and other road users."

They add: "Vehicle unless the context otherwise requires, means a vehicle of any description and includes a machine or implement of any kind drawn or propelled along roads whether or not by mechanical power; "emergency service vehicle" means a vehicle being used by the Police, Fire or Ambulance Services to also include NHS blood transfer vehicles."
