World Cup: Virat Kohli departs for a duck as England strike early in must-win clash

NEW DELHI: India's star batsman, Virat Kohli, endured a disappointing start in the must-win World Cup clash against England on Sunday as the English fast bowlers claimed two early wickets.

In the crucial contest, left-arm quick David Willey delivered the prized scalp of Kohli (0 off 9 balls) in the seventh over. The former Indian captain played a loose shot, resulting in a catch at mid-off by Ben Stokes. The stunning dismissal left the crowd at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium in silence.

Scorecard: India vs England

Kohli, one of the world's leading batsmen, remains just one century away from equaling the ODI record of 49 hundreds held by the all-time great Sachin Tendulkar.

Chris Woakes, another key bowler for England, bowled out Shubman Gill for nine runs in the fourth over.

England, currently sitting at the bottom of the 10-team table, chose to bowl first in their quest for victory and to maintain their slim hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The result will significantly impact the race to the semi-finals in this fiercely competitive tournament.
