World Cup: Roy Keane's rant about Brazil's 'disrespectful' dancing divides fans

Roy Keane has slammed Brazil's exuberant goal celebrations - saying their dancing is 'disrespecting the opposition'.

Following Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea on Sunday (5 December) in their round-of-16 World Cup clash, the team's repeated team dancing goal celebration has caused almost as much reaction as their stellar performance on the pitch.

The South American team turned on the style to sweep aside South Korea. And they greeted each goal with some synchronised samba.

Former Republic of Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane was particularly anguished by the repeated triumphant dancing, saying: "It's really disrespecting the opposition, because it's 4-0 and they're doing it every time."

"I've never seen so much dancing - it's like watching strictly," said 'Keano'. "I just can't believe what I'm watching. I really can't."

Many supporters have agreed with the Cork-born player turned ITV pundit. branded the dance "disrespectful" on social media. However others have defended it as a symbol of jubilance and a thing of "cultural significance" to Brazilians.

Twitter user David Williams (@DavidWilliamsDK) agreed with Keane's viewpoint in the comments section, saying: "I know Brazilians like to dance, but after the first 2 goals I watched the celebrations, first they dance in circle, then they meet again on a line... at every goal. I found it disrespectful to South Korea. It really is too much. Don´t like it. Agree with Keane".

Another user @F_Dev1888 concurred, tweeting: "Spot on Roy. No place for that on a football field."

Brazilian comedian Antonio Tabet (@antoniotabet) took a simultaneously humerous and sarcastic approach in opposition to Keane's annoyance: "Ireland's Roy Keane complaining about goal celebrations at a World Cup is like Ronaldinho disapproving of bobsledding at the Winter Olympics."

Eduardo Hillebrand (@eduardoash) argued Keane's criticism was hypocritical, tweeting a photo of the midfielder's infamous and ultimately career-ending tackle on Alf-Inge Haaland in 2001, with the caption: "Roy Keane saying that dancing after scoring is disrespectful."

Carlos (@ccarloscan) argued that if tournament favourites Brazil were facing tougher competition, they would be more reluctant to celebrate so exaggeratedly: "Lets see how much dancing they do against Croatia/actual football power team".

Several users asserted that Keane does not understand the cultural significance of dance, with one Paulo (@pauloisrod) tweeting: "He will never understand what dance means to us. It's a celebration of life, against a life surrounded by death and sadness, created by your colonial and imperialists governments, companies and our economic elites. Joy is resistance. Yes, we dance!"
