World Cup live udpates: Switzerland edge Serbia in thriller to progress along with beaten Brazil

Switzerland run out 3-2 winners over Serbia in an engrossing encounter to go through alongside Brazil, who top the group despite a shock 1-0 loss to Cameroon.

A point was likely to be enough for Switzerland, but Serbia needed all three points to have a hope of progressing, setting the scene for an open clash.

It was 2-2 at the break, but Remo Freuler's goal shortly after half-time ended up separating the two teams and knocking Serbia out of the World Cup.

Switzerland's win took Cameroon out of the running, but they still created their own slice of history by becoming the first African team to beat Brazil at a World Cup.

Vincent Aboubakar's second half stoppage-time winner sparked wild celebrations, and gave Brazil much to think about before a second-round clash with South Korea.

See how the action unfolded in our live blog.

Are you ready for tomorrow morning?

By Dean Bilton

That's it from us this morning, it's time to go get some rest and gear up for the big one. Tomorrow morning at 6am AEDT, Australia play Argentina for a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals.

It's the biggest Socceroos game for a generation, and we will have all the build up (including this piece from Samantha Lewis you should definitely check out), live action and wash up from that seismic game.

Thanks for your company this morning, and we'll see you then.

Will Brazil be worried after that defeat?

By Dean Bilton

Not really. They very much played their second-string XI for this one, and even the subs they brought on were from the depths of their squad, rather than the big name stars.

They'll look vastly different against South Korea, but will still need to be at their best against a team that proved tonight they are capable of killing a giant.

FT: Switzerland win and go through with Brazil

By Dean Bilton

Key Event

It got tasty at the end as Serbian tempers boiled, but all that matters is Switzerland are winners and will progress to the second round.

In the other game, it's a famous but ultimately fruitless win for Cameroon over a wasteful Brazil. Brazil still top Group G, with Switzerland coming in second, but Cameroon will always have this memory of beating Brazil at the World Cup.

Goal Cameroon! Aboubakar! They lead Brazil!

By Dean Bilton

93': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 1-0 Brazil

It's a special moment for Cameroon! A rapid counter-attack and fantastic cross found Vincent Aboubakar, whose header was sensational past Ederson.

It doesn't change the equation for the group just yet, but if Switzerland were to score one more goal they would finish top of the group ahead of Brazil.

Oh, and Vincent Aboubakar took his shirt off in celebration and received his second yellow card. So he just got sent off. Amazing.

Into stoppage time

By Dean Bilton

90': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Looks like it's going to be Brazil and Switzerland through to the round of 16.

There will be seven minutes added on in the Serbia-Switzerland game and nine in Cameroon-Brazil.

Neymar is not enjoying this

By Dean Bilton

84': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Still (somehow) goalless in the Cameroon-Brazil game, and poor old Neymar is not coping in the stands.

Is Serbia's belief fading?

By Dean Bilton

75': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

The frenetic pace of this game has at last died down, and Switzerland are seeming somewhat comfortable for the first time all night.

Still time for Serbia, but remember they have to win this game to go through. And at the moment, they don't really look like finding two more goals.

Mitrovic wants a penalty

By Dean Bilton

64': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

But the referee says no. There was an arm across his chest as he looked to break through, but was it enough to impede him? It's pretty close to be honest... and there's actually a potential handball in there too.

The play has stopped for Mitrovic to work through some cramp, but half the Serbian bench is currently on the field trying to abuse the referee into consulting VAR.

It's all getting a little ugly.

Gabriel Martinelli having a blinder for Brazil

By Dean Bilton

56': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

He's yet to find a way past Epassy in goal, but he is getting closer and closer. Another fantastic run and shot is tipped over the bar, but the Arsenal man is having a storming debut.

Epassy nearly throws it all away by fumbling Militao's shot into the back of the net but he gets away with it.

What a goal! Switzerland brilliantly lead through Freuler!

By Dean Bilton

48': Serbia 2-3 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Simply gorgeous one-touch passing and moving, and eventually finishing from Remo Freuler. The little backheel flick from Ruben Vargas was sensational, but again the Serbian defence is absolutely wafer-thin.

It's back in Swiss hands now, and Serbia will need to do something special from here.

The second half is underway

By Dean Bilton

46': Serbia 2-2 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Apparently this is the first time since 1958 we've had a 2-2 scoreline at half-time at the World Cup. I'm not going to fact check the commentator on that one, but it sounds cool.

HT: A cracking half of football has Group G on edge

By Dean Bilton

Key Event

That's the most goals in a first half we've seen at this tournament so far, as Serbia and Switzerland go into the break locked at 2-2. Both have seemingly foregone any concept of defence and are determined to outscore their opponents, making for an incredibly watchable game.

Cameroon-Brazil may be scoreless, but that one hasn't been dull either. Chances at both ends - though mostly for Brazil - and a breakthrough seems imminent in that one too.

As it stands, Switzerland are joining Brazil in the second round. But there is SO much yet to play out here.

Huge save from Ederson

By Dean Bilton

48': Serbia 2-2 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Bryan Mbuemo's header looked destined for the back of the net, but the Brazil keeper's reactions were sharp.

Gee, a Cameroon goal would certainly shake things up.

Goal Switzerland! Breel Embolo finishes a fine move!

By Dean Bilton

44': Serbia 2-2 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

This game rules. It looked like a training drill for Switzerland as they moved the ball forward and through the Serbian defence, switched it wide then crossed it low for Embolo at the back post.

So easy. So crucial for Switzerland, who are now back in line for progression.

Goal Serbia! Vlahovic gives them the lead!

By Dean Bilton

35': Serbia 2-1 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Outstanding response from Serbia, and the big striker partnership is getting the job done. That was a delightful little goal, all set up by the press and delicious little through pass from Dusan Tadic.

Dusan Vlahovic took the shot early on his left foot and dragged it back past the keeper into the back of the net. As it stands, Serbia would be going through ahead of Switzerland - but something tells me that won't be the last goal in this one.

Shaqiri so close to a second

By Dean Bilton

31': Serbia 1-1 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Serbia were convinced he was offside, but he most certainly was not. Shaqiri decided to take the shot with the outside of his left boot, and maybe could have done better.

Chances at both ends in this one, proper World Cup football.

Goal Serbia! Aleksander Mitrovic equalises!

By Dean Bilton

27': Serbia 1-1 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

Too easy! And it's a trademark Mitrovic goal!

It was Serbia's turn to counter-attack, and there was acres of space for the break to unfold. Mitrovic is the master of penalty box movement, and his run toward the near post just demanded the cross. A classy glancing header across the keeper does the rest.

Serbia are level again, and this group is a long way from being decided.

Goal Switzerland! Xherdan Shaqiri!

By Dean Bilton

20': Serbia 0-1 Switzerland -- Cameroon 0-0 Brazil

A slick counter-attack from the Swiss is led by Ricardo Rodriguez, and the chance for Shaiqiri is set up by the cool head of Djibril Sow. His pass laid it on a plate for Shaqiri, whose shot took a deflection past Milinkovic.

That's a significant blow for Serbia, who have a mountain to climb now.
