Worksop sinkhole to keep road closed for 'some time' as debris cleared from damaged sewer

A sinkhole will keep a Nottinghamshire road closed for 'some time' as debris is cleared from a damaged sewer. A small hole on Carlton Road, Worksop, was spotted at around 7.45am on Saturday, May 6, but by the evening it had grown larger and reached close to the pavement from the centre of the road.

Severn Trent later confirmed the hole had been created by a damaged sewer. Nottinghamshire County Council has said clearing debris from the sewer may take some time, advising drivers to avoid the area while works continue.

Nottinghamshire County Council said: "Our partners @stwater have confirmed that the road collapse was due to a damaged sewer. They are currently clearing debris out of the sewer which may take some time. The road closure will remain in place whilst the works are underway, so please continue to avoid the area."

Previously locals claimed sinkholes have appeared repeatedly in Worksop over the years. Most recently, a hole opened up in the Matalan car park last August after heavy flooding in Worksop.

In a update on the repairs, Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We're really sorry for the disruption that was caused by a collapsed sewer pipe on Carlton Road on Saturday. Our teams have been on site over the weekend, and have closed a section of road to keep everyone safe as we work.

"To repair the pipe will require a deep excavation and careful planning, as it is an extremely complex, and complicated repair. We will be doing everything we can to fix it as safely, and quickly as possible. Again, we are incredibly sorry for inconvenience that’s been caused, but it is our absolute priority to get everything back to normal quickly and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work on this tricky repair.”
