Building work has begun on a £50m residential development on a former gas works site to the north of Manchester city centre.
McGoff Construction has started work on the Downtown Victoria North scheme on the former Rochdale Road Gas Works.
The company has been carrying out extensive investigations of the site ahead of the build and the site will now be cleared to make way for the new 237-home scheme.
Downtown Victoria North is part of Manchester City Council’s Victoria North Strategic Regeneration Framework.
The scheme will include one, two and three bedroom apartments, with facilities including a gym and a residents’ lounge, around landscaped grounds and courtyards. Downtown Asset Management will manage rental lettings.
The Altrincham-based McGoff Group says the project will take 145 weeks to complete,
Brendan Caloe, head of the Special Projects Division within McGoff Construction, said: “It’s great to be back building in the city centre and the plans for Downtown Victoria North are excellent, with a choice of one, two and three bedroom apartments set within a stunning development.
“Just a short walk to Ancoats, the Northern Quarter, Victoria Train Station and the main shopping district, the development will provide exceptionally well designed high quality apartments for Manchester’s buoyant rental market.”
