Redecking of Southport Pier is expected to take "several years" and will be done in phases when it starts this summer.
The second-longest pier in the UK is set to undergo vital maintenance to replace the decking after it was revealed that the wood along the pier is rotting. The landmark is iconic for a number of families across the northwest as people flock to the seaside town to enjoy the warm weather when it comes.
But with the work being seen as vital, the estimated £206,053 work will take a number of years and will begin this July. Despite work starting this summer, there will be minimal disruption with the pier remaining open during the works, with events already planned to go ahead.

Just last month a man from Southport was left with cuts along his leg when a plank on the pier gave way beneath him, with his family thinking he'd collapsed. Alan Murray was walking down the pier with his family on Friday, June 3 at around 1.30pm when his foot dropped through a piece of wood.
Posting on social media, Lynne Thompson said that the work is expected to take several years and will see it completed in phases. Sefton Council has confirmed that work will begin this year.
A Sefton Council spokesperson said: "Our expert contractors will undertake these staged works with minimal disruption to Pier users and we endeavour to keep the Pier open as normal throughout. Planned events on Southport Pier will continue to take place and we look forward to welcoming hundreds of aviation enthusiasts to our exclusive Pier Seating area for the Southport Air Show in July."
