Miguel Almiron was shown a big vote of confidence ahead of Newcastle United’s clash with Manchester City as supporters’ group Wor Flags unveiled a banner in his support.
Almiron is a player at Newcastle who divides opinion but following a disrespectful dig from Man City player Jack Grealish in which the midfielder remarked that Mahrez had played ‘like Almiron ’ during the champions' final-day victory over Aston Villa, Wor Flags decided to make their support of the Magpies winger clear.
Speaking to Chronicle Live about the display in the Gallowgate, the group said: “After Grealish's comments in the summer when a video went viral and he referenced Miguel Almiron as a sort of criticism, we felt this was the right game to do a message for Miggy. We did one when he first joined but we wanted to show our support for him.
“He's been integral to the first team for quite some time now and hopefully this can give him the boost needed to keep improving. We think he's had a decent start to the season and hopefully, he continues to improve knowing that he has got the backing of Newcastle United fans.
“He comes in for some stick which we think a lot of it is unwarranted. During the dark years, the club had way bigger issues and way worse players than Miguel Almiron.
“He is improving and we wanted to show that support for him in this display.”
The display for Almiron simply read ‘Wor Miggy’ with the image on the banner of the midfielder when he took one of Wor Flags’ black and white flags after the victory over Leicester City last season. It measured a huge five metres high and seven meters wide. There were also black and white streamers either side of the banner, as well as the message: 'Our team, our house, our city'.
There was also a display in the East Stand in which the message was in support of the charity Show Racism The Red Card. The group are very keen to make sure it’s known that racism in society should not be tolerated.
Ged Grebby who is CEO of Show Racism The Red Card praised Wor Flags’ display. “Show Racism the Red Card have always believed that fans have a central role in the fight against racism. Indeed SRTRC was established in January 1996 by NUFC fans. We are proud that Wor Flags are supporting our antiracism work and hope other supporters will take up this great initiative.”
