Woolworths return wanted by almost half of brits, according to new survey

If there is one thing that we can all absolutely agree on, it is that there was nothing better than a trip to Woolworths when we were younger. From its much loved pick and mix to its range of toys you begged your mum for, it's a place that will forever have a place in our hearts.

And it looks like the love we have for the nostalgic store is still going strong, as more than half of Brits across the country wish the iconic store would make a return to the high street.

A new Yougov poll has found that 49% of Brits who were surveyed wish that the now defunct retailer was still around. The nostalgic high-street chain was the place to be during the 80s and 90s before it sadly became the casualty of the financial crisis that hit in the 2000s.

The new survey found that the return of Woolies was the most requested return across generations, reports Wales Online. Those aged 50-64 are the most likely to want to see it back, at 60%. A third of 18-24 year olds – who will have been between four and 10 years old when the chain closed in 2009 – wanted to see the store open again.

And Woolies was not the only nostalgic chain that was highly requested for a resurrection, as Debenhams came in second place with 13% of Brits saying they miss the department chain.

Rival chain British Home Stores (BHS) - which closed in 2016 - was also a strong contender to be resurrected with 10% wanting to see its return. Clothing retailer C&A came in fourth at 7% - 21 years after it exited the British market in 2001.

Other lost high street names picked up just a few percentage points. These included Toys R Us, Blockbuster, Comet, Littlewoods and Maplin.

One in four Britons - 23% - said they didn't have any high street chains they’d like to revive. And 1% wanted House of Fraser to come back - even though it is still operating with 33 branches in the UK and another five converted to the Frasers format.

YouGov polled 1,717 adults in the UK. The research was carried out on August 8 and 9.
