'Wonderful' boy, 14, who died in canal had jumped in 'as a prank' and couldn't get out

A teenage boy who died while swimming in a canal has been described as a "wonderful" lad with a loving girlfriend.

George Lund was named locally as the 14-year-old who was pronounced dead at the scene at Aire and Calder Navigation Canal in Leeds on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a lock after pals said he "disappeared" from views as temperatures reached highs of 13C.

Specialist dive teams were deployed and found the boy, but he was tragically pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Today, George's devastated mum, Stacie, left a heartbreaking message paying tribute to her "precious baby boy" as she laid flowers at the lock on the canal.

The note on the card reads: "My precious baby boy, rest in eternal peace. Until we meet again. Mum loves you forever and always. Forever 14."

She was supported by relatives as she visited the scene, where teddy bears and cards have been laid.

George's mum also wrote on Facebook: "I love and miss you so much my gorgeous baby boy. I just need you back."

Another card left at the scene reads: "Smudgey bum, words can’t describe how much you will be missed. Love you lots, from Auntie Jam."

George's grandmother Sam Buckham said he was trying to swim to a ladder but he was beaten by the current.

She said he had jumped into the water as an Easter prank thinking he'd be able to get out quickly.

She said: "He briefly came to the surface once and then sank below and his girlfriend called for help."

His aunt Samantha Lowe said her nephew's death was "traumatic and heartbreaking".

One heartbreaking card read: "George Thomas Robert Lee Lund, I am so lost without you, my heart is broken, I love you all around the world and back again.

"Til we meet again. RIP."

Friends have also paid tribute to the tragic teen on social media.

One well-wisher wrote: "He was only 14, found his first love and everything. He had his life ahead of him. Gone too soon."

Another wrote: "Gone too soon. You were far too young and such a lovely young man. I hope you're at peace wherever you are watching over your family."

A third added: "Wonderful and very polite lad, will be sadly missed. RIP young man. Much love to his family and girlfriend at this sad time."

Police said they were called just after 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

The lad was believed to have been swimming with friends before he disappeared from view.

It came as Brits flocked to parks, beaches and beauty spots over the bank holiday weekend to enjoy the warm weather.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 4.32pm on Saturday, police received a concern for safety report for a male in the canal by Thwaite Lane, Leeds.

"Emergency services attended and recovered a teenage male from the water.

"He received medical attention at the scene but was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been prepared for the coroner."
