'Won more than them' - Frank Lampard brings up Sean Dyche Everton comments after Manchester United win

Frank Lampard has responded to Sean Dyche's post-Burnley comments about his Everton side after they beat Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues came out on top against a lacklustre United team as Anthony Gordon's first-half strike, which deflected off Harry Maguire to fly past David De Gea, secured a crucial 1-0 win and three points.

That followed two defeats in quick succession on the road for Everton, first beaten 2-1 by West Ham United last Sunday before Burnley edged them out at Turf Moor with a 3-2 triumph. Following that latter game, Dyche revealed he had told his Clarets players at half-time that he questioned whether the Blues knew how to win a match.

Lampard, when asked about his team keeping a clean sheet against Man United, addressed those comments once more, revealing that he had spoken to Dyche since, and admitting he would say the same to motivate his squad behind the scenes.

The Everton manager remarked: "It's a big deal, we've had clean sheets here. We're not easy to break down here, and there are moments in games where you have to defend and be tight and compact. We knew that'd be how the second half went. It was our third game in a week, we knew the energy levels were going to drop so we had to close the distances.

"And we do know how to win games! Sean didn't mean it in that way - I've spoken to him since. We've won more games than them this year! But I understand the sentiment, we've been losing games away from home and he had to motivate his team. I'd say similar things behind the scenes.

"But what we need to do is focus on ourselves, show that mentality of today and organisation of today again. It's only three points, there's a long way to go."

A win for the Blues allowed them some breathing space in their fight against relegation. However, Lampard is only focused on what they can achieve until the end of the season.

"Some people around me are calculating how many points sides will get, it doesn't matter to me. I have an eye on it, but all I think about is the next game," he added.

"If it changes the face of it right now, it could look different by the end of tomorrow night. We know it's absolutely in our hands to keep performing, keep giving everything for every game to stay in the league. Regardless of the others."

After what was a disappointing result in midweek, Lampard praised his players for being able to pick themselves up and show the fighting qualities needed. In particular, he was delighted to see Gordon be the man to get the winning goal.

Lampard said: "I've got to give the lads a lot of credit here. Two defeats in a week, with performances good enough to get points but we didn't get it.

"But to go again on Saturday morning against a team that was fresh, full of quality - and show that level of fight, spirit and desire, to join the fans into the equation, they got what they deserved.

"I feel like we've been due one of those, a deflection and a goal to hang on to. I'm pleased that it's Anthony, because it's what he deserves. He loves the club, he's been here since he was a young boy. You speak to him and you feel he's mature for his age, he wants to score goals and make assists.

"For him to get that is just a culmination of those things together. No wonder the fans love him."
