Summary
Well, what a game to start the women’s State of Origin series and to kick off Magic Round! A tightly fought first half gave way to NSW dominance in the second half and they just pulled all the string to keep the ball in their hands and in QLD’s half of the field. While their attack was extremely impressive, it was their defence that really won the game – it is not easy keeping the Maroons’ spine of Upton, Aiken, Brigginshaw and Brown quiet. All four have an excellent kicking game, brilliant passing skills and the tactical nous to change a game at any moment. To neutralise all four is astounding, but the Blues managed it – and at Suncorp Stadium no less!
It wasn’t what the record crowd of 26,022 would have wanted to see, but it’s fantastic for the women’s game that these crowd records continue to be broken. With games two and three being played in NSW, QLD have their work cut out for them, but they showed their ability to quiet a parochial crowd in Newcastle last year.
This game has certainly set up a scintillating series and I can’t wait to see what the teams have in store for us at Allianz Stadium in Sydney in two weeks! Until then, I suppose you can keep your rugby league watching going by watching the men, but I won’t blame you if you decide to just wait for the women to play again. Thanks for joining me and good night!
