'Womanising' Glasgow roofer is a rapist with no remorse for 16 years of sex abuse

A womaniser was jailed for seven years today after subjecting a woman to a catalogue of violent and sexual offending over nearly 16 years.

Roy Clark committed a series of physical and sexual assaults on his victim, including rape.

A judge told Clark, 41, at the High Court in Edinburgh: "For such sustained and serious conduct it is necessary to impose a substantial prison sentence."

Lord Beckett also ordered that Clark should be under supervision for a further three year period when he can be recalled to jail if he breaches licence conditions.

The judge told him: "I recognise you have not been convicted of a sexual offence before nor have you been convicted in this court before."

But Lord Beckett said Clark remained in denial over what he had done and showed no remorse.

The judge said that he accepted that Clark, a former roofing firm boss, had a history of responsible employment.

Clark, of, Glasgow, had denied a series of charges at an earlier trial but was found of perpetrating physical and sexual assaults and rapes against his victim.

The offences occurred at Shettleston and Easterhouse, in Glasgow, and Rutherglen and were committed between 2002 and 2018. He was cleared of assaulting and threatening a second woman.

Clark denied during his evidence that he was controlling and manipulating towards the victim and said: "I was the one frightened of her."

Defence counsel Sarah Livingstone said: "He maintains his innocence, but accepts he has to be sentenced on the basis of the jury's verdict."

She said Clark did not dispute that he was "a womaniser" but added that he was a man who worked hard and built up a business.

Clark was told he would be on the sex offenders' register for an indefinite period. He was also banned from entering an area of Rutherglen.
