Woman who died after car entered Cork river named locally as two kids escape

A woman has died and two children were hospitalised after their car entered a waterway on Friday night.

Horrified bystanders watched as the car reversed into the River Lee at Kennedy Quay in Cork.

They managed to pull the two boys, who had managed to free themselves, to safety.

The children, aged ten and 12, were taken to Cork University Hospital and treated for shock before being released into the care of relatives. Divers recovered the body of the woman from the submerged vehicle after it was lifted by a crane shortly after midnight.

She was named locally as Gillian Daly from Marlborough in the greater Douglas area of the city.

Gardai are treating the incident as a tragic accident.

They are hoping to speak with the children to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy. They have appealed for any witnesses, especially those with dash-cam footage, to contact them.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardai are investigating all the circumstances of an incident where a vehicle entered the River Lee. Two children were recovered from the water and were taken to Cork University Hospital to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

“The woman’s body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.”

Cork Missing Persons Search and Rescue, which was involved in the operation, posted: “We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
