A woman's "romantic getaway" plans were ruined when the Airbnb she booked in Bali turned out to be an abandoned villa.
A short clip of the desolate and overgrown building went viral after Bree Robertson posted it on TikTok earlier this month. It has been watched more than 3.4 million times and attracted in excess of 155,000 likes.
The New Zealander, who has been living on the Indonesian island since giving up her nine-to-five job in June and documents her travels under the username @atypical_adventure, said she assumed the $80 a night listing was still active because Airbnb said the host had a response time of one hour.
She told her followers that the property in East Bali, which she intended stay at with her partner, had "some great reviews" on the app and looked stunning in the pictures provided.
The video's narration reads: "When you book an Airbnb in Bali and it's an abandoned building... completely overgrown. No one home. Smashed windows."
The traveller commented that it was "sad to see because it was definitely the place in the photos, just all in disrepair".
She revealed that the listing had been reported to Airbnb's support team and that she had been given a full refund.
Responding to users who joked that she and her partner should've stayed there anyway, Bree admitted that the overgrown site was "beautiful in its own way" but was "just not liveable".
An Airbnb spokesperson told The Independent that "the listing is no longer on the platform".
They said: “We were disappointed to learn about this experience and provided our support to the guest at the time, including a full refund.
“We hold Hosts up to high standards and the listing is no longer on the platform. In the rare event something isn’t as expected on arrival for a stay, our Community Support team is on hand 24/7 to help.”
