A woman has tragically died one month after being involved in a horror crash on the A1(M), police have confirmed.
Kyle Schofield, of Reed Close, Coxhoe, caused a two-vehicle ,collision, which involved a Ford Kuga and VW Golf, last month on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M), close to Carrville. A woman sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
The woman in her 20s was a passenger in the Ford Kuga which also contained three other occupants who suffered minor injuries. No-one else was injured.

On Tuesday, a Durham Police spokeswoman confirmed that the woman tragically passed away at the weekend, with Schofield appearing at Durham Crown Court via link from HMP Durham. The 24-year-old admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision at a hearing last month and was due to be sentenced.
However, the sentencing was adjourned after the court heard one of the passengers involved in the collision, a woman in her 20s, had recently passed away. Chris Knox, defending, told the court: "There has been further developments in this case, one passenger has passed away."
Prosecutor, Peter Sabiston, added that due to the "tragic developments over the weekend", the case should be adjourned so that the Crown can have time to review the charges, as there may be "a further serious charge brought". Judge Ray Singh said a pre-sentence report and a psychological report would also need to be prepared on behalf of Schofield before he is sentenced.
Judge Singh adjourned the sentencing until Friday, September 16. Schofield was remanded in custody until his next court appearance. Following the crash, which happened in the early hours of May 22, the road was closed for eleven hours to allow collision investigators to work at the scene and for the barrier to be repaired.
