Woman thrown to ground by police officer after city centre row

A woman was thrown to the ground by a male police officer after a chaotic disturbance in the city centre this weekend.

Footage shared with the ECHO shows a confrontation between two groups on Victoria Street, at around 4am on Sunday, which begins as two men are being separated by a group of five Merseyside Police officers. One man in a light grey t-shirt is pulled towards the road while a man in a black t-shirt is pulled towards the buildings along the street.

The video clip, filmed by a bystander, shows how while the officers are holding the two men, a blonde woman in a light green dress is grabbed by the hair from behind by a second woman, with darker hair and a dark green dress.

Three officers can be seen in the video jumping in to pull them apart. However, seconds after the blonde woman is freed from her attacker's grasp, she is grabbed by a male officer who uses her bodyweight to throw her over his outstretched leg, causing her to land heavily on the pavement.

The woman remains on the ground as the male officer and a female colleague then stand over her. The footage does not appear to show the woman struggling at the moment she was thrown to the ground.

It is not clear what started the incident or why police were called to the scene, and it is not known whether the woman was injured during the fall. Merseyside Police have been contacted for comment.
