Woman's new map of where she thinks North-South divide begins sparks furious reaction

Liverpool and Sheffield are resigned to the Midlands, while the North doesn't start until you hit Leeds... that's according to one woman's map drawing the line for the where the North begins, which has sparked fury amongst Twitter users.

Michelle Bayly sent Brits reeling over her unpopular opinion over where to divide the country into North, South and the Midlands, also cutting the South off at Northampton.

The threshold for being a Northerner meanwhile lies at Leeds and above, resigning cities such as Hull, Liverpool, Sheffield and Manchester in the same region as Birmingham.

But the map hasn't cut it with Twitter users, many of whom fumed at the idea of even Bradford, which is merely a few degrees shy of the cut-off, being considered a Midlands city.

Michelle, an actor and voiceover artist from the North East, wrote: "Can we all agree that the North is Leeds and above?

"It’s really annoying seeing The North such and such company or something artsy North and for it to be in Birmingham etc.

"There’s also a middle…the midlands. Be the midlands. North of London doesn’t mean North."

One Brummie however took objection, saying "there is nothing branded as ‘North’ here, we don’t even get an ‘x Midlands’".

The Birmingham resident added: "We very much want to be Midlands but both northerners and southerners tend to deny the Midlands exists so this map is welcome".

Grimsby native John Yeo meanwhile said the North line should lie somewhere "in between Liverpool and Sheffield".

"I think the idea that Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Hull aren’t in the North is slightly mad," wrote Steven Lally.

Michelle meanwhile gave more reason for her theory, claiming that "Leeds is definitely the feeling of finally getting to the North" when driving from London back to Newcastle.

At least we can all agree on one thing - that Newcastle and Gateshead are certainly part of the North (Getty Images)

"Maybe we need North and North North," she suggested.

The voiceover artist claims she has since scrapped the map in favour of a more gastronomical divide than geographical.

"After deep thought and consultation I have decided to scrap my map of North, Middle and South and instead go with the popular opinion that if you have gravy on chips or scraps and mushy peas with fish and chips then you are Northern and if not then not (no matter the geography)," she wrote.
