If you offer to cook for someone who is vegetarian, it probably goes without saying you should cook a veggie-friendly meal. Well, one woman who opted to prepare a roast chicken for a vegetarian relative was shocked to learn she wouldn't try the dish.
But she was not the only one left surprised, as the vegetarian diner was left aghast when the cook slammed her decision, and called her "disrespectful" when she made herself an alternative meal. The trouble arose after the non-meat eater welcomed her brother and his wife to stay at her home. During their visit, her sister-in-law offered to cook for the group, but the disagreement over dinner quickly turned ugly.
Baffled by her guest's reaction, the vegetarian diner took to Reddit to ask for advice, where people were shocked to learn someone had insisted she eat meat in her own home.
In her anonymous post, the 28-year-old from New York explained she has been vegetarian for over ten years and it is a choice all her family know about and respect. However, she was left in a difficult position when her brother, 24, and his wife, 25, came to visit.
She explained: "Usually my sister-in-law will cook some thing for one of the nights that they stay for dinner.
"This time she ended up cooking a roast chicken dinner, with beef rice, and a shepherds pie, which does have ground lamb. I told my sister-in-law that I couldn’t eat that because I’m a vegetarian, in case she had forgotten.
"She told me that she spent over 3 hours cooking and that I was going to deal with it and eat it, or not eat for that night.
"I told her to calm down and that I was just going to make myself a salad. This made her break down in tears saying that I was disrespectful to her and the hours she spent cooking. While this was happening I just made a salad and ate it in the living room."
Outraged, the in-law then told the vegetarian she could never eat her cooking again, but she was unperturbed, reasoning it "wouldn’t be a big deal because she continues to make non vegetarian meals" anyway.
Keen to know if she had been in the wrong, the woman then asked fellow Reddit users to respond to the question: Am I the A******? And people overwhelmingly agreed the woman was not at fault.
One person wrote: "It's extremely rude and disrespectful to prepare all meat in your vegetarian host's house, and then try to guilt trip you? Ridiculous."
A second thought: "She basically went out of her way to make sure that every side dish also contains some kind of meat. What's up with that?? Seems pretty intentional."
A third added: "Who the hell visits someone else's house and tries telling them what they can and can't eat..."
And another said: "Excuse me, she visited at YOUR HOME and said you eat the meat she cooked or you are not allowed to eat for the night? Is she seriously that deluded? "Please tell her that she is projecting, she is the disrespectful one, and she is not allowed to visit again."
In response, the veggie woman revealed she has decided her sister-in-law can no longer stay in her home, later adding she will not be allowed to cook there either during future visits.
