Woman shares 'best' Brussels sprouts recipe that will even make them edible for haters

A TikTok creator may have just shared the key to making Brussels sprouts edible – just in time for Christmas.

Brussels sprouts are a controversial Christmas dinner item – some people love them, some people hate them.

Either way, you don't have to endure the green vegetable in its usual boiled fashion. The Modern Proper on TikTok has shared a delicious recipe that might just convert you if you're a hater.

Two friends Holly and Natalie regularly share impeccable recipes on their TikTok and website, but one particular side dish has sent people into a frenzy.

Forget boiling the life out of your veggies this Christmas, and try Brussels sprouts au gratin instead.

With lots of of cheese and cream, it's incredibly indulgent (@themodernproper/TikTok)

Posting the recipe on the video sharing app, the food creator captioned it: "Thanksgiving side dishes. The best part of the meal. This Brussels sprouts au gratin is the best side dish and we're bold enough to say it because it's true."

In the video, they claim that it's "maybe the best side dish ever" and that they will be "eating this from now until the end of the year as a side dish for every single holiday meal and then some".

Showing how the dish comes together, the friends explain the main ingredients – cream, leeks, Gruyère and Parmesan cheese, shaved Brussels sprouts and top it off with crispy panko bread crumbs.

First, preheat your oven to around 215 degrees celcius, and grease a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

Grab a large skillet, put it on a medium heat and add two tablespoons of olive oil. Add three large, thinly-sliced leeks and cook for four minutes. Then add four cloves of minced garlic and cook for one more minute.

Once it's done, transfer the mixture into a large bowl, and toss it with about 450g of shredded Brussels sprouts.

To the same skillet as before, add about 470ml of heavy cream, 114g of Gruyère cheese and 85g of Parmesan cheese, salt (one teaspoon), pepper (half a teaspoon), thyme (two teaspoons) and nutmeg (quarter of a teaspoon).

Bring all these to a simmer and stir continuously until the cheeses melt and it becomes a thick sauce. This should take around three minutes.

Then pour the sauce over the sprouts, toss together and transfer it into the baking dish. Put it in the oven for 20 minutes.

While it cooks, combine one cup of panko breadcrumbs with 85g of Parmesan and three tablespoons of olive oil.

When there is around five to eight minutes left, scatter it over the dish and pop it back in the oven.

For the whole recipe you can head to the Modern Proper website, which has a step-by-step guide to make the yummy side dish.

Many foodies were incredibly excited to try the recipe. One person commented: "I don't like Brussels sprouts but this looks so delicious."

Another said: "This looks incredible."

While a third added: "I love sprouts but have never really done much except steam them. This looks delicious."
