Woman scored a rare Yankees jacket at Goodwill. She couldn’t believe what happened then: ‘I was in tear’

A TikTok user who goes by @TheImmigrantWife says another shopper took a New York Yankees jacket out of her cart at a Goodwill store and refused to give it back.

The creator shared a video of the incident, which has been viewed more than 190,400 times and has gotten over 7,000 likes. In her caption, she said the incident happened at “A NORMAL GOODWILL, not GOODWILL BINS.”

She said the jacket was a “Newyork Yankee patched bomber jacket” that she had found and held onto for only a few minutes before it was taken. She wrote in her TikTok video caption, “I was in tear saying goodbye to my jacket.”

Creator says store staff told her they could not help

The video shows a woman filmed from behind, wearing a white top and denim shorts, looking through a shelf of books or media inside the store. A blue Goodwill shopping cart sits next to her, with a plastic upper basket and a metal lower basket. Such unexpected discoveries at thrift stores can spark strong emotions, as when a North Carolina woman broke down after recognizing her own handmade artwork on a jacket at Goodwill.

The camera then zooms in on the cart. A white garment with an “NY” patch, similar to the New York Yankees logo, can be seen among other clothes inside the upper basket. On-screen text says, “Waiting to have a documentary about Thief at Goodwill bc This lady stole my NY yankee jacket from my cart, when I spotted her, she refused to give back the jacket Goodwill is getting wild!!!”

The video also shows the woman’s legs and feet as she stands by the cart before the camera moves back up to show the jacket still sitting inside it. The cart is labeled with the “Goodwill Changing Lives” logo. The video ends with the cart still in place, and the video does not show whether the jacket was ever returned.

In the comments section, one viewer wrote, “I’d be going to get a manager and requesting video footage in front of her unless she gave it back- yes I am that petty!” The creator replied to this comment, saying she had done exactly that. She wrote, “I did! They said there’s nothing they can do.” Other viewers shared their own opinions on the situation. One comment read, “You can not take a jacket from someone’s cart!! YOU found it YOU put it in YOUR cart FIRST !!!”

Another viewer disagreed, writing, “Um unless you purchased it and have a receipt it’s all up for grabs….” Another comment read, “It’s not good well it’s people have such a loose morals anymore so selfish.” One viewer offered a general tip for other shoppers, writing, “Rule #1 Never leave your cart unattended at Goodwill.”

Another comment took aim at resellers, stating, “Resellers make thrifting a competative sport. I hate them all.” Goodwill shoppers often uncover surprising finds, as when a woman spent a Wednesday afternoon going through racks only to realize everything she pulled was already hers.
