We meet many people throughout our lives, and chances are, most of us know someone who does whatever they like. Their spontaneousness is usually fun as it can lead to some incredibly memorable experiences when spending time together. However, it also makes them difficult to reach when they decide to disappear all alone.
But as one Redditor shared, not everybody connected to these people handles these situations the same. When her free-spirited friend went ‘off the radar’ as usual, she didn’t bat an eye. On the other hand, her friend’s boyfriend decided to ‘blow up’ the woman’s phone with calls, refusing to believe that she had no idea where his girlfriend went to the point where she had to threaten to block him. Some time later, the woman’s friend called her and told her that her boyfriend wanted an apology for the way she spoke, to which she gave a hard no
The OP and a woman named Summer have been friends for a very long time. As she described, Summer is a free spirit who does things like dropping out of college and hitchhiking to Mexico, all without saying anything to anyone.
The poster’s friend also forgets to pay her phone bill, so her being unreachable is nothing new either. But despite all that, the two women are friends for life, and none of these little hiccups have the power to change it.
Surprisingly, Summer’s boyfriend, Will, who she has been dating for a year, is a completely opposite person. But while the OP initially hoped he could help her friend become a little more settled, she didn’t account for some other things that came with his oppositeness.
When her friend once again forgot to pay her phone bill, and the guy couldn’t get through to her, he called the poster to ask for help locating her. But since the woman was as clueless about Summer’s whereabouts as he was, she responded pretty lightly and hung up, assuming that Will understood how his girlfriend was.
Turns out, he didn’t. The guy decided that the poster must know something and started ‘blowing up’ the author’s phone while she was working, being angrier than before each time.
The OP started ignoring the guy’s calls but lost it after his 50th attempt. She picked it up and angrily told him once again that she didn’t know where his girlfriend was, threatening to block him if he didn’t stop.
The storm died down for the moment, but some time later, Summer called the poster, demanding that she apologize to her boyfriend for what she said. When the OP refused, but her friend didn’t back off, the poster told her that she had no intention of apologizing because the boyfriend was on some ego trip, and the call ended abruptly.
It’s unlikely any commenters had to read the story twice before agreeing that the woman was not a jerk here. But while the community’s ‘AITA’ judgment was clear, people were still left curious about some oddities in the guy’s behavior, asking questions that, at the time, the poster could only theorize on herself.

We, too, were looking for additional details about this story, and thus, Bored Panda reached out to goldencain1410, also known as Quinn Anderson, who turned out to be a published romance author.
“I largely write contemporary romances, and my latest one is called Are You Kitten Me. It’s about an adorable kitten named Meatball and her matchmaking antics after two people try to adopt her at the same time,” shared the writer, adding that she was first published in 2012, so the industry is a well-known place for her by now.
But while Quinn usually writes fiction, this recent story with Summer was very much real, and fortunately, for all of us curious out here, more interesting stuff has happened since.
The author told us that she hasn’t spoken to Summer since the incident, only sending a few messages and receiving no replies. “However, I called her mom, and she assured me that Summer isn’t currently with Will. Apparently, she ditched him sometime after we last spoke, because her folks said he showed up at their house looking for her,” revealed Quinn, adding that the next time they talk, she’ll be sure to tell her to dump the guy.
The OP further explained that there was no way Will couldn’t have known what his girlfriend was like, as they’d been together for a year. She said that if she had to guess, the reason for his outburst most likely involved Summer forgetting some Valentine’s Day plans and him being angry about it. “Also, for the record, he and I have never gotten along. When he’s being a jerk, I tell him to his face, whereas Summer tries to keep the peace.”
Quinn shared that even though this wasn’t her first viral post, she was surprised by its popularity nonetheless and was glad that most commenters were not trolls but people who were genuinely concerned about her friend.
Adding to that, the author also revealed that when posting the story, she was quite certain she wasn’t the jerk of her story, which might appear unfitting for the AITA community. However, it wasn’t an attention grab, either. “I was baffled by what had happened, and I was hopeful someone would be able to explain Will’s weird behavior to me. It seems I came to the right place, too, because people in the comments connected dots that I didn’t even see.”
In the end, it seems that this time, the Redditors really came through. While probably none of us are acquainted with Will, the guy’s behavior makes him seem like a dangerous character, and it’s thanks to the AITA’s members that this observation was brought into the light.
We might not yet know how the rest will play out, but all the signs seem to point that it’s going in the right direction. Hopefully, this little lousy argument won’t be enough to break up the long-time relationship between the author and her friend. And who knows, maybe this story will eventually inspire Quinn’s next novel.
