Woman's nightmare TUI holiday where men knocked on her door 'looking for a fight'

Two women have spoken out about a nightmare holiday in Cyprus where men showed up at their doors in the middle of the night 'looking to fight'. Jayne Gelder, 50, of Wollaton and her friend went on the "crazy" holiday and say the man in the room next door decided to threaten people off his balcony and give the wrong room number to those looking for a fight.

Jayne and her friend decided that they wanted a little getaway to relax and recharge away from the kids, and booked to stay at the Anmaria Hotel in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, from Friday, September 30 until Friday, October 7. Jayne said that she knew it was "a party capital" but that the hotel seemed nice, although they were warned of the music around the pool each day.

She said: "We paid for seven nights all inclusive. We left on Friday afternoon and we didn't arrive at the resort until 5am Saturday morning, so that's already one of our nights gone and we weren't even there.

"You're not using your all inclusive that you've paid for because you were travelling, and you've had to pay for food on the plane." Once the pair arrived at the hotel, Jayne says they were greeted by a rude staff member, and nobody helped them take their luggage up to the room.

Then the following day the duo were around the pool when the music was switched on. Jayne said: "They put like house music or whatever it was on and it was on all day. I said to my friend I feel like I'm watching the Queen's funeral again as I'll I've got in my head is the same thud thud thud thud.

"But I'm in Ayia Napa so I'm not going to moan about that, that's where I was end of story." During their stay the pair had issues with the "disgusting" food and also witnessed lads inhaling from balloons right next to the pool.

Jayne said: "We sat on the balcony and there was two guys around the pool where kids were as well, and you know when you do those gas cannisters into balloons and inhale it. I said to my friend am I dreaming? What I am seeing.

"They were sat there inhaling what was in the balloons, and then they are throwing the cannisters into the bush behind them and the balloons are just on the floor where they are around the pool. This is just unbelievable."

On Wednesday, October 5 the pair had to deal with another "crazy" incident. Jayne said: "It was three o'clock in the morning and I'm thinking what is this banging. I can hear someone out on the balcony, and it was the lad next door to us, and I swear to god he was offering everybody out, telling everyone about the drugs he had taken.

"It went on and on and on. Then I hear all this banging so I look through the curtain and he's basically throwing the table that was out on the balcony into the room and you could hear it smash.

"Then he came out with the leg and he's offering the paupers on the second level, anyone want a fight, come up here I'll f*** shank you, should have paid a few more f***king euros and been up here on the top floor. The majority of people are there and they are on their balconies awake because this muppet is just shouting."

In a video seen by Nottinghamshire Live, the man next door can be seen shouting threats at people from his balcony. In the video he can be heard telling someone "I'd poke your eye out with a plastic fork."

The man next door proceeded to tell people to come to his room if they want to fight, but mistakenly gave the angry crowd Jayne's room number instead. She said: "Instead of shouting 210 he's shouting 212.

"I said to my friend this is great isn't, you know what's coming next, some idiot is going to be knocking at our door." Jayne called security and asked them to sort the problem, but shortly after they had "young men knocking on our door with bottles to fight our delightful neighbour.

She said: "There's two lads there and one of them is like where the f**k is he. I told them I'm telling you for your own good go back to your room and go to bed and ignore the idiot next door.

"All you're going to do is get yourself in trouble, and for someone like that why bother. They went, I phoned back security and said what are you doing, as I've just had two guys with bottles knock at my door looking for this idiot next door.

"And they were like oh he's not answering the phone. Of course he's not on the phone, he's out on the balcony shouting and waking everyone up."

Soon after Jayne had somebody else knocking at her door. She said: "It was three lads, I just said listen he's in the room next door, but go back to your room and go to bed." She encouraged the individuals not to cause any problems for themselves and to just leave her neighbour alone.

"As two females this wasn’t the best night and most certainly didn’t feel safe as security clearly didn’t feel safe enough to attend either, didn’t offer much confidence." Jayne then went to reception as by this point she had phoned security three times and they requested to move hotels.

When asked where she wanted to move to, she said: "I don't care as long as we are going for like for like, what we are in now we want to go to." By this Jayne meant an all inclusive hotel, but the hotel TUI moved her to only offered breakfasts and dinners, guests had to pay for their drinks and sort their own lunches.

Then on the evening of her final day, she and her friend were given a bill for their dinner, costing 57€. She said: "The last day we were there we paid to keep the room longer as the time they were picking us up wasn't until 11:30 at night. We checked out the room, it should have been 6 but it was half five, we went down for food and we are halfway through the food when a guy comes to us and says you are going to have to pay for that food because you've checked out."

Jayne asked then if they had not checked out, would the food have been included, to which she was told: "It's the day you are checking out so you don't get fed." Since returning to the UK Jayne has contacted her local TUI shop in West Bridgford, but says she has so far not been contacted by TUI and will not be using them again.

A spokesperson for TUI has since said: "We’re concerned to hear about Ms Gelder’s experience in Cyprus. The safety and security of our customers is our number one priority, and we are currently investigating this further with the hotel.

"We will be in in touch with Ms Gelder directly to discuss the concerns raised."
