Woman's in-laws refuse to use her child's 'unusual' name and feel it's too 'pretentious'

A mum claims she's been left dismayed after discovering the real reason why her in-laws never refer to her two-year-old son by his real name. According to this saddened mother, her little boy has a "lovely" nature-inspired name, but she admits it is a bit "unusual", in a similar vein to names such as "Bear, Finch, and Cedar."

She has long been aware that her husband's parents aren't all too keen on the name. After giving birth, she sent them a pic from the hospital, however, she felt they deliberately responded in such a way that they didn't have to actually mention or compliment their choice of name.

Furthermore, they have never referred to the toddler by his real name, instead choosing to refer to him as "gorgeous little boy" or "the little one." After getting her sister to do a bit of digging, her long-held suspicions have now been confirmed.

Taking to Mumsnet, where she goes by the username AnaDay, the fed-up mum recalled: "We were at a family gathering earlier and I asked my sister to drop this into the conversation to try and find out what on earth the problem was (obviously in a tactful and diplomatic way).

"The feedback was they think it’s a really pretentious name and they are concerned he will get bullied especially later on when he goes to high school!"

She can't help but feel quite upset by this revelation, despite having long expected it. Her husband says it shouldn't matter and that "everyone is entitled to their opinion", however she is struggling to move past this and has reached out to fellow Mumsnet users for advice.

One person advised: "They sound like nice people who love their grandchild and have made sure not to offend you by saying what they really think about his name. People have different tastes when it comes to names, I wouldn't worry too much about it."

Another commented: "Your in-laws are being polite. They haven’t spoken against the name, they are simply avoiding using it. Eventually, they will get used to the name. They can’t avoid it forever. This is going to be a case of don’t ask a question if you can’t handle the answer."
