Woman's 'amazing' roast potato cooking hack with no oven required

As the cost of living crisis continues to sweep through the UK, households are looking to use as little energy as possible to slash bills.

People are trying to find the best tips to cut their electricity usage, ranging from ways to stay warm without turning on the heat to buying more energy efficient appliances. Consumers have been seeking out cost-reducing cookware to replace the classic oven, which costs roughly £1.02 an hour to run.

Now, one clever woman has shared her method for making crispy roast potatoes with a slow cooker, which runs at just 5p an hour.

While Ria McCullough's tip for cooking roasties might seem unconventional, others who have seen it are eager to give it a go, reports the Mirror.

In a Facebook post, Ria claimed her take on the roast potato recipe was so good that she'll "never cook them conventionally again".

So how exactly does she do it?

The home cook started with some Navan potatoes, which she parboiled for 10 minutes, before leaving them to steam dry in a colander.

As they cooled, she sprinkled some flour, salt and pepper, onion granules and some sage over the top before shaking the spuds to coat them in the mixture.

Ria then added "a few glugs" of mild olive oil to her slow cooker and turned the temperature up high so the oil would be nice and hot when she put the potatoes in.

The potatoes then got tossed in the oil so they were coated and were left to cook on high for four hours, with a tea towel placed under the lid, turning twice during the time.

Ria's post on the public Facebook page Slow Cooking UK, received more than 2.7k likes and over 700 comments. Alongside the method, she shared a photo of the potatoes she had cooked looking golden and crispy.

One person replied: "They are amazing, a little bit of oil. Didn't realise I could use the SC [slow cooker] for anything other than a casserole."

Another said: "Never thought of doing roasties in my SC, but they sure do look amazing", while a third added: "OMG you've just saved my Sunday roasts (until I finally get a new oven that is lol) beauties."
