Woman rushed to hospital after sexual assault in south London

A woman had to be taken to hospital after a man allegedly raped her near West Croydon railway station in south London.

The reported victim, in her 30s, said the attack happened just before 1am on Saturday, close to the junction of London Road and Kidderminster Road.

Heilab Assefa, 28, was arrested on suspicion of rape at the scene and taken to hospital as a precaution.

Assefa has since been charged with two counts of assault by penetration and was set to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Walter said over the weekend: “I know the local community will be incredibly concerned to hear about this terrible incident.

"I want to offer my full reassurance that a thorough investigation is underway.

"Local residents should expect to see an increased police presence in the area as we continue our enquiries.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 and give reference CAD 266/18November.
