Woman Rescued Alive After 5 Days Under Gaza Rubble

Palestinians try to rescue a woman stuck under the rubble of a destroyed building following Israeli airstrikes in Khan Younis refugee camp, southern Gaza Strip, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023.

A miraculous rescue operation unfolded in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City, where a woman was saved after enduring five days trapped under rubble following an Israeli strike. The incident occurred on October 15 when an Israeli strike hit the home where the woman's family had sought shelter after being displaced from another area in Gaza.

The Gaza Civil Defense team had initially recovered one deceased individual and several injured persons from the site. However, hope was reignited when residents reported hearing sounds indicating the presence of survivors buried beneath the debris.

The Civil Defense team swiftly responded to the reports and returned to the scene of the strike. Through sheer determination and the use of basic tools, including a jackhammer, they managed to extract the woman, identified as May El Helou, from the rubble.

May El Helou is currently receiving medical care and recovering at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Her survival serves as a beacon of hope amidst the tragedy that has befallen many families in the region due to the ongoing conflict.
