Woman recovering from eating disorder hails Finglas Addiction Support Team for 'giving her life back'

The Finglas Addiction Support Team (FAST) provided vital services to almost 800 members of the community last year.

The group offers a wide range of services to those affected by addiction including counselling, family support, holistic therapies and aftercare.

The service was set up by volunteers back in 2004 who realised there was a demand for it in the area.

Since then, FAST has massively expanded and moved into a purpose-built centre on Wellmount Rd in 2011.

Caroline has been using FAST's services since last August and said their support has "given her her life back".

She told Dublin Live: "I attended FAST last August. I was in a really bad place mentally and physically, suffering from an eating disorder.

"My family have a background of alcoholism and I found myself struggling in my own life and it played out through an eating disorder.

"With that, the service here was offered to me because of my family background.

"I didn't really know about FAST until a friend of mine got them in touch with me.

"They've given me my life back with the support and help they've given me and they continue to do so as I attend here on a regular basis.

"It's a really fantastic service."

Earlier this month, they launched their new strategy plan which will see the organisation having a more on-street presence over the next three years.

Linda Phillips, Outreach team leader at FAST told Dublin Live that the community "fought really hard" to get this vital service.

"FAST has been around since 2004. It's here because the community fought really hard to bring services into the community," she said.

"Family members and service users walked the streets and marched to get this service.

"This is a purpose built building and it was built in 2011.

"We've been here ever since and we've grown hugely. In 2021 we saw 772 people."

Sonia Dillon, Services Team Leader explained that the group have implemented services to help its users get on a pathway to recovery.

"Part of us coming in was to try and build a recovery orientated system of care so that anyone coming into FAST would be on a pathway towards recovery and have a recovery outcome eventually," she said.

"People are on different stages of that recovery pathway but some of the programmes we have implemented here at FAST has helped them go towards the recovery outcome that they want."

Amy Roche, FAST CEO, launched the group's new strategy plan earlier this month.

She told Dublin Live: "We launched our strategic plan, it's titled 'Creating integrated pathways, recovery and action'.

"It's a three year plan and it was born partially from a need for a new strategic plan but also partly from the recent global pandemic.

"It has informed a change of direction in our service so that would include FAST having more of a on-street presence and now in Finglas-Cabra and also beyond in different parts of Dublin North West."
