Woman Pleads Guilty In DUI Crash Killing Bride On Wedding Night

Lisa Miller, left, and her daughter, Mandi Jenkins, wipe tears from their eyes after testifying during a bond hearing for Jamie Lee Komoroski, Aug 1, 2023, at the Charleston County Courthouse i

A tragic incident unfolded in South Carolina last April when a woman was charged with killing a bride on her wedding night in a DUI crash. The accused, Jamie Komoroski, 27, was more than three times the legal limit when she crashed into a golf cart carrying newlyweds Samantha Miller, 34, and Aric Hutchinson, 36, resulting in Miller's untimely death.

As the trial was set to begin, Komoroski pleaded guilty to one count of felony DUI, two counts of DUI causing great bodily injury or death, and one count of reckless homicide. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the judge.

During the court proceedings, Komoroski expressed her guilt and waived a jury trial, stating that she was not coerced into pleading guilty. Hutchinson, the grieving husband, acknowledged that while he believed Komoroski was remorseful, the loss of his wife and the impact on their planned future remained profound.

The fatal crash occurred when Komoroski, driving at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone, collided with the newlyweds as they were leaving their reception in Folly Beach. Miller succumbed to her injuries, while Hutchinson suffered severe physical trauma.

Hutchinson and Miller's family addressed the court, sharing the devastation caused by Komoroski's actions. Hutchinson recounted the heartbreaking moment of losing his wife shortly after their wedding vows, while Miller's mother emotionally described the last dance she shared with her daughter before the tragedy.

In a gesture of remorse, Komoroski apologized to the families, expressing deep regret and accepting full responsibility for her actions. A $1.3 million partial settlement was approved in June, with Hutchinson filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Komoroski and the establishments that served her alcohol on the fateful day.

Despite some settlements with the businesses involved, the final amount was lower than expected due to an estate dispute between Hutchinson and Miller's mother regarding their marital status. The legal aftermath of this heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence.
