Woman mortified as boyfriend proposes with 'prank' ring he claimed was an heirloom

A woman has admitted to feeling embarrassed and confused after her boyfriend proposed to her with a ring that he claimed was a family heirloom - only to later confess that it was actually just a prank ring.

Sharing her story on Reddit, the woman said her boyfriend has been asking her what ring she would like as her engagement ring for almost a year, and she has sent him reference photos to describe exactly what she wants.

But when he eventually proposed, he used a ring that was completely different from the one she had asked for - as he claimed it was a family heirloom.

The woman wasn't bothered about the change in style and loved the idea of his family trusting her enough to be "part of their history", until she was later told by her boyfriend that he'd lied about the origins of the ring.

In her post, she said: "My fiancé has been asking me what I want for my engagement ring for close to a year. I’ve sent him reference photos at his request. He’s asked me explicitly what carat I want.

"I told him repeatedly what my ideal would be, but emphasised that I would be happy with anything from him because it would be a symbol of his love and commitment.

"Fast forward to two weeks ago, he ended up proposing with a ring that was completely different than what we discussed. He told me it was a family heirloom. I was thrown off because he never mentioned it before, but regardless, I was over the moon not only at the thought of marrying him but also because his family wanted to give me something so sentimental.

"Obviously I said yes and I can only imagine I appeared as ecstatic as I felt. I took the ring and was overjoyed. He paused for a moment and was confused, but kinda recovered and we went about our normal lives.

"I’ve been talking about how happy I was to have something so meaningful from his family for the past two weeks."

Seeing his girlfriend so happy with the ring, the man was pushed to confess to his lie and told his girlfriend the truth - that he'd actually picked a random ring to "prank" her with, expecting her to be upset that it wasn't the ring she'd asked for.

He then presented her with the real ring, but the woman was left so confused that she simply walked out of the room - leaving her boyfriend fuming.

She added: "Yesterday he sheepishly came to me and gave me exactly the ring we had talked about. At first, I was gutted - I thought his family no longer wanted me to have a part of their history. So, he clarified that the first ring wasn’t an heirloom, it was something he bought as a joke and he was expecting a reaction out of me. And he was shocked he didn’t get one and didn’t know what to do when I was so happy with the first ring.

"I was floored. At that moment, I was so confused and had so many conflicting feelings I couldn’t process in real time that I didn’t know what to say. I just walked out of the room.

"He now is saying that I ruined our proposal/wedding story by walking away and 'shutting him out' when he gave me an expensive ring. He is genuinely upset at me for not being stoked he 'pranked me' initially."

Commenters on the Reddit post were equally baffled by the man's actions, with many calling his prank "childish".

One person said: "It's horrifying enough that he's so childish that he thought that turning his marriage proposal to you into some sort of prank on you was in any way appropriate; but to then try to blame you for not being thrilled when you found out and making an actual, literal joke out of it? I can't imagine feeling anything but betrayed and furious."

Another added: "What the heck kind of prank was that? Did he want you to throw a fit during the proposal? I don't understand. If anyone ruined your proposal story, it was him and his weird prank."

While a third wrote: "I’m speechless at what a bizarre thoughtless prank the first proposal was."
