THANE: The Mumbra police have launched manhunt to nab three conmen who cheated customers at the ATM kiosk by exchanging their ATM cards.
The complainant in the case is a Mumbra resident and it was earlier this month that she went to the ATM kiosk to withdraw money which she required for some personal work.
"As she went inside the kiosk three persons came behind her pretending to wait for her to complete her transaction,” said a police officer.
As her ATM card got stuck in the machine, one of the accused offered to help her.
One accused told her to check the balance on screen, while other one diverted her and as she looked behind, the third accused exchanged it in fraction.
The victim went outside the ATM and again came back to withdraw the cash however as her ATM card was linked to her son’s number he received a call from him asking whether she has withdrawn cash of Ra 10000 to which she denied and later he received another text message that a total of Rs 23000 has been withdrawn.
She then realised that she has been cheated by the trio.
The police registered a case of cheating under the Indian penal code and launched the probe.
The police secured the CCTV footage of the accused inside the ATM and have now released it to identify and nab them. The police suspect there could be a bigger gang involved in the racket.
