Woman left 'really uncomfortable' after pal asks to split cost of whopping €105 takeaway

A woman was left feeling "really uncomfortable after a friend of hers asked to split the cost of a massive €105 takeaway.

While sharing a meal is a great way to catch up with old friends or even get to know someone new, it can be costly and will always lead to the age-old question of what to do when the bill arrives.

One woman faced the same dilemma when having a takeaway with her friend as she tried to decide whether they should simply split the cost evenly or pay exactly what they owe for their half of the dishes.

However, the mum was left gobsmacked after visiting her friend's house and was asked to split the cost of a whopping €105 Chinese takeaway bill, having eaten just a third of what was ordered.

Taking her concerns to the Am I Being Unreasonable forum on Mumsnet , the unnamed mum was "speechless" that she was fronted with a cost.

The woman admitted the shock surrounding the ordeal, considering that her friend had invited her for dinner.

She explained: "I visited my friends home recently with my 12-year-old and she has three kids herself and lives in a very nice large home (just for information).

"I took some gifts for them, then early evening she said there was a great Chinese nearby and should we order a takeaway?

"Great idea - I ordered a few dishes for me and my daughter and she ordered five dishes for her and her three children.

"She then said that's £92 and just give her £45," she added.

She continued: "I was speechless as we were guests in her home and she invited us for dinner and I was scrambling through my purse as I had my cards on me and only just had enough cash to give her.

"I would never do that to a guest in my home and I felt really uncomfortable afterwards.

"Just wondered what you think as it's been bugging me," she pleaded for advice.

Whilst the mum admitted that she would "never" ask a guest in her home to split the bill, fellow Mumsnet users were quick to disagree.

People online admitted that they would always "expect to pay" towards the cost of food - no matter if it was at a restaurant or at home.

"I would have added up the amount for the dishes I had ordered and paid that," one user said.

Another added: "I'd expect to pay towards a takeaway in friend's house."

"I would expect to split a takeaway, just as I would a meal in a restaurant," a third agreed.

A fourth added: "I'd pay for what I ordered and towards a delivery charge/tip."
